What is Champagne?

Champagne can be labeled as the most leading and prestigious sparkling wine in the world. Champagne is a sparkling wine made in the Champagne wine region of the same name in northeastern France. Only in this specific area, defined by French law, Champagne may be made. Three grape varieties are used to make Champagne: pinot meunier, pinot noir and chardonnay. The winemaker can choose to use one grape for his Champagne, or a variation of different grapes. All Champagnes receive a second fermentation in the bottle, which brings the festive bubbles into the Champagne.
